About This Beautiful Mess
An independent fan tool for the UEFA Champions League 36-team Swiss-format league phase. Not run by UEFA. Run by a person who should probably be doing something else.
So⦠what is this thing?
It's a Champions League simulator for the new league phase: 36 clubs, one enormous table, and eight matches each. Real official results sync in automatically, you type in scores for whatever hasn't been played yet, and the standings recalculate instantly using the competition's actual points and tiebreaker rules. Then you download the table as an image and inflict it on a group chat that did not ask for it. That's the whole product. We're very proud.
Why does it exist?
In 2024 UEFA looked at eight tidy, comprehensible groups of four and thought, "what if none of this made sense?" So they replaced them with a single 36-team league table that updates in ways that require a spreadsheet, three monitors, and a small support group to follow. We built the spreadsheet so your brain doesn't have to. You're welcome. Or we're sorry. Possibly both.
How it actually works (the real bit)
Every club plays eight different opponents β two drawn from each of the four seeding pots, four at home and four away. There's one combined table for all 36. After the eight matchdays: the top 8 go straight to the round of 16, teams 9thβ24th drop into a knockout play-off, and 25thβ36th go home to think about what they've done. Ties are broken by goal difference, goals scored, and a few more criteria β which our tool applies automatically, exactly like the real thing. If you want the grown-up version, read the Swiss format explained.
Is it accurate?
The maths is real: the same tiebreaker order UEFA uses, applied honestly. The predictions are as accurate as your football takes, which β statistically β is "brave." We are not UEFA's official supercomputer. We are a person, some JavaScript, and the unshakeable belief that our team is one good matchday from the top 8. Real results come from public match data and can lag a little behind the live score, because we are refreshing every few hours, not standing pitchside with a clipboard.
Who built it?
An independent football fan with too many opinions and a browser with too many tabs. There is no press box, no sponsorship, and no corporate overlord β just a free tool kept alive by a couple of tastefully-placed ads (which is why there's a cookie banner; sorry, the internet insists).
